Portuguese general strike expected to cause widespread travel disruption
Portugal General Strike Could Disrupt 500 Flights on 3 June
Travellers heading to Portugal next week are being warned of major disruption as a nationwide general strike threatens to impact up to 500 flights on 3 June.
According to the SNPVAC cabin crew union, services operated by TAP Air Portugal, easyJet and Ryanair could all face delays and cancellations as aviation workers join widespread industrial action across the country.
The strike has been organised by several Portuguese unions in protest against proposed labour reforms, with the aviation sector expected to be among the hardest hit.
SNPVAC President Ricardo Penarróias told local media that as many as 500 flights could be affected during the one-day walkout, potentially causing significant disruption for both domestic and international travellers.
TAP Air Portugal Introduces Flexible Rebooking Policy
In response to the strike, TAP Air Portugal has announced a flexible rebooking policy for affected passengers travelling on 3 June.
Customers holding tickets issued by 20 May for travel on the strike date can rebook flights free of charge. Passengers may choose to travel earlier, between 27 May and 2 June, or postpone their journey to between 4 and 11 June.
The airline said customers can make changes directly through its website or via their travel agent.
Ryanair Expects Normal Operations
Despite the planned industrial action, Ryanair said it currently expects to operate its schedule as normal and does not anticipate significant disruption to its services.
EasyJet, however, warned that some disruption remains possible and said passengers affected by cancellations or delays would be contacted directly with available options.
A spokesperson for the airline said:
“We will be doing all we can to minimise the impact of the strike action and will contact customers directly with their options if their flights are affected.
“While this is outside of our control, we are sorry for any inconvenience this strike action may cause.”
Wider Public Transport Disruption Expected
The strike action is also expected to affect Portugal’s wider public transport network.
Transport union FECTRANS has confirmed participation in the walkout, with disruption anticipated across Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro and commuter rail operator Fertagus.
Passengers travelling through Portugal on 3 June are being advised to check flight and transport updates regularly and allow extra time for journeys.
