The Foreign Office is warning travellers that the situation in the Middle East ‘remains unpredictable’ after strikes by Iran in several locations across the region since 8 July.

It is now advising against all but essential travel to Bahrain, following a warning from the US Embassy in the capital Manama that Iran might launch attacks in unspecified locations in the city centre.

In an update to its advice for several other countries, including Turkey, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the Foreign Office said there is a risk of more attacks and ‘unforeseen escalation’ in the region.

It also warned of possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and potential travel disruptions.

The Foreign Office is not advising against travel to any of these countries, but it was already warning against non-essential trips to Aqaba’s International Airport and seaport following reports of missile attacks on Jordan.

In an update to its travel advice for Cyprus, it said: “The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable.”
