Aberdeen Airport Security Strike Suspended After Improved Pay Offer

Passengers travelling through Aberdeen International Airport this summer could avoid disruption after airport security staff suspended planned strike action following an improved pay offer.

Members of the Unite union, who make up the majority of the baggage screening team employed by ICTS HBS Security, had been due to stage 14 days of industrial action across July and August in an ongoing dispute over pay.

However, the planned strikes have now been put on hold after the company presented a revised offer at the eleventh hour.

The suspension will allow union members to vote on the latest proposal before deciding whether industrial action will go ahead.

Summer Travel Disruption Could Be Avoided

If accepted, the improved pay offer would prevent strike action during one of the busiest periods of the year for UK air travel.

Airport security and baggage screening staff play a key role in keeping passengers and luggage moving through the terminal, meaning any industrial action could have resulted in delays for travellers flying from Aberdeen this summer.

Unite Says Improved Offer Came Too Late

Despite welcoming the improved proposal, Unite criticised the timing of the offer.

Unite industrial officer Paula Buchan said the revised package should have been presented much earlier in negotiations.

She added that the improved offer only came about because union members remained united throughout the dispute and refused to back down on their pay demands.

Union members will now vote on whether to accept the revised pay offer from ICTS HBS Security.

Until the ballot concludes, the planned 14 days of strike action have been suspended, reducing the immediate risk of disruption for passengers travelling through Aberdeen International Airport.
