There's a small but growing expense creeping into UK travel that catches a lot of people off guard: the cost of simply being dropped off at the airport. Charges at the country's busiest airports have jumped sharply over the past year, and for travellers who like to keep their journey as smooth as possible, it's worth knowing what you're likely to pay before you even reach check-in.
Just How Much Are We Talking?
Recent analysis of the UK's 20 busiest airports found that the vast majority have increased their drop-off charges in the last twelve months, with average prices climbing by around a third. Gatwick currently sits at the top of the list, charging £10 for a ten-minute window at its closest drop-off point to the terminal. Stansted charges the same amount but allows a slightly more generous 15 minutes.
London City Airport, which only introduced charges this year, works out as the priciest on a per-minute basis — £8 for five minutes. At the other end of the scale, Birmingham remains the most affordable of the major airports, at £7 for 15 minutes.
Belfast International has also raised its prices, now charging £5 for a 10-minute drop-off. Compare that to much of mainland Europe, where none of the ten busiest EU airports charge for dropping passengers off at all, and it's easy to see why UK travellers increasingly feel like they're paying a premium simply to say goodbye at the kerb.
Why Are Airports Charging More?
Airports argue the fees serve a genuine purpose — encouraging travellers to use public transport or park-and-ride options instead of clogging up terminal frontages with cars. There's also a stated environmental angle, with airports pointing to local air quality and congestion as reasons for the charges, particularly as some expansion plans (like Gatwick's proposed second runway) come with government-mandated targets for increasing the share of passengers arriving by train or bus.
Not everyone is convinced by the reasoning. Critics point out that the justification for these charges seems to shift over time — from environmental concerns, to congestion management, to funding new transport links — which makes it harder to know exactly what the money is being used for.
Whatever the motivation, the practical reality for travellers is the same: a cost that's easy to overlook until you're the one waiting at a barrier, working out how to pay online within a set time limit to avoid a penalty charge notice.
How to Avoid Getting Caught Out
A few small habits can save you a genuinely unnecessary expense:
- Check the airport's charges in advance. Fees and payment methods vary significantly between airports, and some allow online or app-based payment within a grace period.
- Look at long-stay car parks instead. Many airports offer free shuttle buses from car parks slightly further out, which can be a far cheaper option than the terminal drop-off zone.
- Consider public transport links. Larger airports like Gatwick are increasingly well connected by rail and bus, sometimes making the train the more relaxed option anyway.
- Time your goodbyes. If you are using a drop-off zone, keep an eye on the clock — most charges are billed in short blocks, and overstaying even slightly can trigger a much steeper penalty.
- Ask about Blue Badge exemptions. Several airports, including Gatwick, exempt Blue Badge holders from drop-off charges.
