Hidden Gems

Why the quiet resorts are having their moment

There's a shift happening in ski travel, and it's worth paying attention to. Resorts that used to sit quietly in the shadow of the big names — Flaine and Les Menuires in France, Bansko in Bulgaria — are seeing a real increase in visitors. Not because they've changed, but because travellers have. A growing number of skiers are doing their own research, booking their own flights and transfers, and deliberately choosing resorts that don't carry the premium price tag of Courchevel or Val d'Isère.

We think that's a sensible instinct. We just think it's worth doing properly.

Why these resorts are getting noticed

The appeal isn't complicated. Flaine offers genuinely good, snow-sure terrain at a fraction of the cost of its Grand Massif neighbours, with an architectural oddity of a resort centre that's become part of its charm rather than a drawback. Les Menuires gives direct access to the Three Valleys — one of the largest linked ski areas in the world — without the price tag that comes with staying in Méribel or Courchevel next door. Bansko, meanwhile, has quietly become one of the best value ski destinations in Europe: modern lift infrastructure, reliable snow, and a cost of living that makes an entire week's food and drink cost less than two nights out in the Alps.

None of this is a secret anymore. It's simply arithmetic that more people are doing.

Where DIY travel works, and where it doesn't

Booking flights, a transfer, and an apartment yourself is straightforward enough, and for a lot of these trips, it works fine. Where it tends to fall down is in the detail that only shows up once you're there: an apartment that's a twenty-minute walk from the nearest lift rather than the five minutes the listing implied, a transfer company that doesn't run on the day you actually land, lift passes bought at the window instead of pre-booked at a lower rate, or a week where the snow report was better twenty minutes up the valley than where you booked.

None of these are disasters. They're just the sort of thing that turns a good-value trip into an average one, for reasons that had nothing to do with the resort itself.

Our view

We're not precious about resort snobbery — a well-chosen budget resort can deliver a better week than an expensive one booked badly. What we'd rather do is bring the same level of care to a trip to Bansko that we'd bring to a trip to Verbier: the right apartment in the right spot, transfers that are actually reliable, lift passes and equipment hire sorted before you land, and a heads-up if the snow's better on a different side of the valley that week.

Value and quality aren't opposites. The travellers heading to Flaine, Les Menuires and Bansko this season have that right. Our job is simply to make sure the trip matches the resort's own good sense — no premium price tag, and no rookie mistakes either.

If you're weighing up one of these resorts for this season, it's worth a conversation before you book anything — we know all three well, and a few adjustments to timing or logistics can make a meaningful difference to the week.
