Florence: A Renaissance Weekend, Tailored to You

There's a particular quality of light in Florence — a soft, honeyed glow that settles over terracotta rooftops in the late afternoon — that has drawn artists, writers and travellers here for centuries. It's the kind of light Brunelleschi built a dome for, the kind Michelangelo carved marble by, and the kind that still makes first-time visitors stop mid-step on the Ponte Vecchio, phone forgotten in their pocket.

At Yugen Trouvaille Travel, Florence is one of our favourite European city breaks to design — not because it needs much dressing up, but because it rewards it. This is a city where the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one often comes down to details: which terrace you're on for the sunset, whether your hotel is a two-minute or twenty-minute walk from the Uffizi, and whether someone has already booked your table before the kitchen sells out of its signature dish.

Why Florence Works as a Weekend Escape

Florence is compact in the best possible way. The historic centre — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — can genuinely be explored on foot, which means less time in transfers and more time actually in it. A long weekend is enough to feel like you've properly met the city, while still leaving you plenty of reasons to come back.

It's also wonderfully versatile. Florence flatters:

  • Couples looking for a romantic escape, with candlelit trattorias and river views built in
  • Art and culture enthusiasts, thanks to arguably the greatest concentration of Renaissance art anywhere on earth
  • Food and wine lovers, sitting as it does at the doorstep of Chianti
  • Solo travellers, who'll find the city safe, walkable and endlessly absorbing
  • Anniversary and milestone trips, for the sheer romance of the setting

A Weekend in Florence, Done Properly

Morning: Il Duomo and the Historic Centre Begin, as most journeys through Florence do, at the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore — Il Duomo — whose vast brick dome still dominates the skyline exactly as it did when it was completed nearly 600 years ago. Climb it early, before the heat and the queues build, for a rooftop view over the city that puts everything else that follows into context. From there, wander into the Piazza della Signoria, an open-air sculpture gallery in its own right, before the crowds properly arrive.

Midday: The Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio The Uffizi Gallery holds one of the world's great collections of Renaissance painting, but it rewards a plan rather than a wander — a pre-booked, timed entry with a private guide turns a potentially overwhelming afternoon into a genuinely memorable one. Afterwards, cross the Arno via the Ponte Vecchio, the medieval bridge lined with jewellers that somehow survived the Second World War intact, and let the golden hour do its work.

Evening: Oltrarno and Dinner With a View Cross to the quieter Oltrarno district, home to artisan workshops, leather-makers and some of the city's most atmospheric wine bars. Dinner here — think Florentine steak, pici pasta, and a glass of something from just outside the city — feels less like a tourist stop and more like a local secret. For a final flourish, a terrace above the rooftops at sunset, Duomo in view, is the image most people take home in their head.

A Day Beyond the City: Tuscany If your break stretches to three or four days, a day in the Chianti countryside is well worth the detour — vineyard visits, a long lunch, and the kind of rolling hills that look almost too perfect to be real.

Where to Stay

Florence's boutique hotel scene is one of its quiet strengths — restored palazzos and townhouses that put you within easy walking distance of everything, often with a rooftop bar of their own. Whether you're after understated five-star elegance, a design-led boutique stay, or a quieter property just across the river in Oltrarno, the right base changes the whole rhythm of the trip — which is exactly the kind of detail we work through with every client before a single flight is booked.
