Foreign Office warns of strikes and demonstrations in Italy
What has happened
The Foreign Office warned UK travellers to Italy, including Vatican City, to expect possible disruption from a national strike and demonstrations. The strike was called by the Grassroots Trade Union (USB) across public and private sectors and ran from the evening of 29 October to the evening of 30 October. Demonstrations were expected in more than 50 cities, including Rome, Milan and Naples.
Rail and public transport
The planned transport strike was called off after an order from Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Trenord and Trenitalia said trains would run to the normal timetable, and public transport operators across the country gave similar assurances. Trenord described the rail strike as postponed to a later date, so a new date may still be announced. Some disruption was still possible where staff took part in demonstrations.
What the Foreign Office says
It reports that recent demonstrations in northern Italian cities led to violent riots and looting, with more police and military on the streets in Milan. It says further demonstrations may take place in major cities, and advises travellers to check with their transport provider for the latest information.
What it means for travellers
If you are travelling to Italy in the coming weeks, allow extra time for journeys, check your train, flight or transfer the day before, and avoid demonstrations where you can.
