Foreign Office issues advice after Galapagos declares flooding emergency
Galapagos update: flooding on Santa Cruz
What has happened
Heavy rain on 31 October caused flooding on Santa Cruz, the main island for visitors to the Galapagos. The local authorities declared an emergency. Road closures, power cuts and disruption to travel to Baltra Airport have been reported, and Puerto Ayora has been affected.
What the Foreign Office says
The FCDO advises travellers to follow the instructions of the local authorities, avoid flooded areas and confirm travel arrangements with their airline or tour operator. The local authorities have also asked tourists on Santa Cruz to complete an online form (in Spanish only) saying whether they need urgent help and what their travel plans are.
What the industry says
The Latin American Travel Association reports that hotels, transport providers and guides are still operating, although the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The Galapagos National Park has temporarily closed access to six visitor sites on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal as a precaution. Some roads have controlled access. One operator, Tropic Ecuador, has confirmed that all its travellers on the ground are accounted for and safe.
What it means for travellers
Tourism across the islands is continuing, but itineraries in affected areas may need to be adjusted. If you are due to travel soon, stay in close touch with your travel adviser or operator for the latest information.
